Why do we study maths?

The mathematics curriculum aims to ensure students become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics. Through their course of study, it is intended that they will develop key reasoning and problem solving skills which can be applied not only in mathematics lessons but in other contexts and life after school. During Key Stage Three, learners are introduced to the fundamentals of number, algebra, geometry, measure and statistics. These are then built on in Key Stage Four where a greater focus is on reasoning skills through enquiry, conjecturing relationships and proof. Problem solving is also integrated throughout the five year curriculum by encouraging students to apply their learning to routine and non-routine problems in order to develop resilience and perseverance

Homework Expectations

Homework is an important aspect of our curriculum. Not only does it offer the opportunity for students to recall previous topics by spaced practice, it also offers a chance for them to enhance their understanding of key topics and fundamental Mathematics skills outside of the classroom. All students are expected to use the ‘Sparx’ platform to complete their homework. This includes access to an explanation video, a complimentary quiz and regular bookwork checks. Homework is personally adapted to each child. They must obtain 100% in their homework using support provided by ‘Sparx’ and teachers where necessary. Independent Practice, Target Practice and XP Boosts are also available for students to use in order to extend their knowledge.

How can parents and guardians support at home?

As well as monitoring homework and supporting independent revision, there are a range of ways in which parents and guardians can help to support their child with developing their mathematics skills. If a student is finding the homework tasks challenging, parents should monitor and encourage the usage of the video and the supportive ‘building blocks’ which are designed to fill any gaps in expected knowledge and can be found at the bottom of the screen. 

Some other techniques that might help students when preparing revision materials are:

  • Buying a revision guide and workbook available on parent pay 
  • Encourage students to look at lesson notes in their exercise books
  • Prompt students to make use of the green/blue revision buttons displayed on the school website login screen. Here they will find revision materials such as skill lists, past papers and other useful documents
  • Encourage Year 11 students to attend revision sessions held after school on multiple days during the week
