(PSHE) Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education
This is delivered on four Personal Development days throughout the year.
On these days the normal timetable will be suspended and each year group will participate in workshops and activities, some of which will be run by outside agencies and professionals in this field. This will enable the students to explore these issues in more depth.
Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education has in various forms been part of the national curriculum for schools in England since 2000. PSHE is defined by Ofsted as a planned programme to help children and young people develop fully as individuals and as members of families and social and economic communities. The goal is to equip young people with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live healthily, safely, productively and responsibly.

YR 7 Emotional wellbing – Rights & Responsibilities
- (Consumer rights) Exploring different kinds of rights and obligations and how these affect both individuals and communities.
- (Responsibilities of the government, armed forces, police, fire department, etc.) Understanding that individuals, organisations and governments have responsibilities to ensure that people are supported and protected.
- (Human rights) Investigating ways in which rights can compete and conflict, and understanding that hard decisions have to be made to try to balance these.
- (Legal rights) Understanding your legal rights.
- (Freedom of speech) The role of the media in informing and influencing public opinion and holding those in power to account.
- (Rights & responsibilities) In school.
YR 8 Economic Risk & Financial Understanding
- (Bank accounts and savings) Risk and reward, and how money can make money through savings, investment and trade.
- (Budgeting) How businesses and people use finance.
- (Loans and mortgages) What are loans and mortgages. Social and moral dilemmas about the use of money. Student loans for higher education.
- (Debt) Understanding the need to manage debt in the context of financial and career choices.
- (Fraud) How to minimise fraud and what to do if it happens.
- (Taxes) Understanding the functions and uses of tax.
YR 9 Identities & Diversity
- (Diversity & prejudice) The power of prejudice and the need to take the initiative in challenging this and other offensive behaviours and in giving support to victims of abuse.
- (Diversity & religion) Exploring the diverse national, regional, ethnic and religious cultures, groups and communities in the UK and the connections between them.
- (Community) Exploring community cohesion and the different forces that bring about change in communities over time. Appreciating that identities are complex, can change over time and are informed by different understandings of what it means to be a citizen in the UK.
- (Migration) Migration to, from and within the UK and the reasons for this.
- (Genocide and atrocities) Exploring genocide, racial and religious intolerance across the world.
- (European Union) The UK’s relations with the European Union, the Commonwealth, the United Nations and the world as a global community. Brexit and the referendum.
YR 10 Personal Identity
- (What is your identity) Understanding that identity is affected by a range of factors, age, sex, culture, residence, ethnicity, place of birth, school, etc.
- (Building positive Self Esteem) Recognising that the way in which personal qualities, attitudes, skills and achievements build your self-esteem.
- (Bullying – how it affects your self-esteem) How bullying and other negative connotations can impact on your self-esteem. Understanding that self-esteem can change with personal circumstances, such as those associated with family and friendships, achievement and employment.
- (Domestic abuse) Understanding that abuse can lower self-esteem and how and where to get help in difficult situations.
- (Body image) How the media portrays young people, body image and health issues.
- (Mental health) The characteristics of emotional and mental health, and the causes, symptoms and treatments of some mental and emotional health disorders.

YR 7 Healthy Lifestyles
- (Self-esteem) Recognising that healthy lifestyles depend on information and making responsible choices.
- (Emotional health & support) Understanding that physical, mental, sexual and emotional health affect our ability to lead fulfilling lives, and that there is help and support available when they are threatened.
- (Sex Education/Puberty) Dealing with growth and change as normal parts of growing up. Physical and emotional change during puberty.
- (Disease) Sexually transmitted infections. HIV and how high-risk behaviours affect the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities.
- (Drug abuse) Facts and laws about drug, alcohol and tobacco use and misuse, and the personal and social consequences of misuse.
- (Healthy balanced diet) How a balanced diet and making choices for being healthy contribute to personal wellbeing. The importance of balance between work, leisure and exercise.
YR 8 Relationships
- (Relationship skills) Understanding that relationships affect everything we do in our lives and that relationship skills have to be learnt and practised.
- (Team work and working together) Understanding that people have multiple roles and responsibilities in society and that making positive relationships and contributing to groups, teams and communities is important.
- (Domestic abuse, violent behaviour) Understanding that relationships can cause strong feelings and emotions. How to get help in abusive relationships.
- (Different types of relationships) Boys and girls, and people of the same sex, including civil partnerships.
- (Marriage) The nature and importance of marriage and of stable relationships for family life and bringing up children.
- (Online grooming and relationships with people) staying safe online, grooming and the dangers of relationships between older and young people.

Yr 10 Justice & the Law
- (Magistrates courts) Participating actively in different kinds of decision making and voting in order to influence public life.
- (International law) Looking at laws in other countries, criminal record restrictions when travelling. Case studies of Julian Assange, Nelson Mandela.
- (Law) Understanding that justice is fundamental to a democratic society and exploring the role of law in maintaining order and resolving conflict.

- (Asylum seekers, immigration – The Truth) What is an asylum seeker? Analysing data on asylum seekers. What rights do they have? Can they work?

Yr 7 Sustainability

- (Pollution) The harm and problems it can cause to environments and humans.
- (Deforestation) The diminishing forests on planet Earth.
- (Population growth) How to solve the problems faced by increasing and aging population.
- (Renewable fuels) Fuels of the future. The diminishing fossil fuels.
Yr 8 Government and Democracy
- (Parliament) Understanding and exploring the roles of citizens and parliament in holding government and those in power to account.
- (The Law) The roles of the law and the justice system and how they relate to young people.
- (Democracy and voting) Key features of parliamentary democracy and government in the constituent parts of the UK and at local level, including voting and elections.
- (Local government) Participating actively in different kinds of decision-making and local election voting in order to influence public life.
- (The public sector) The needs of the local community and how these are met through public services and the voluntary sector.

Yr 9 Personal Risk
