Eco-Schools Club

School Clubs

ECO-NEWS Winter 2008

In Studley High School there is a group consisting of children, teachers, technician, teaching assistant and governor who meet once a month to discuss environmental issues. This year we have been talking about ‘sustainabilty’ and this lead us to think about starting a Gardening Club in the Spring. We are hoping to receive an accelerated composter soon, in which we can recycle all our food waste into compost. We are hoping to grow food for the kitchen, e.g. lettuce, spinach, carrots, etc..

We have discussed ways of saving energy and water. As a result we completed an environmental review and tried to formulate an Action Plan. To save water we put bottles of water into the toilet cisterns to take up the place of water. To save energy we ran a survey and rewarded tutors groups with a certificate who have shown better awareness of energy saving. We put stickers on light switches and lovely pictures created by children in Art to encourage people to switch off light switches. Also we have tried to encourage them to recycle paper rather than to throw it away.

During 6th-10th October, we ran a Pick-Up Plastic Week and recycled over 100 bottles.

We have debated World Vegan Day in November and all agreed it would be better if we ate less meat.

We have thought about ‘Buy Nothing Day’ during which we are encouraged not to waste things.

In the wild area, bat boxes kindly donated by the technology dept. have been put up to join the bird boxes already placed there last year. We have also fed the birds in the very cold weather.

We have been placed in the final three in a competition called ‘Go Green’ run by the Birmingham Mail.

Last year the Bronze Medal was attained in Eco-Schools and this year we hope to go for Silver.

Following the success of the Science and Engineering Clubs in previous years we are once again providing a Forensic Science after school club for a limited number of Year 9 pupils this year.

The achievement of the Science CREST Silver Award requires a consistent level of commitment and because there is a limited number of places, they are offered on a first come, first served basis.
