Languages in Key Stage 3

In Year 7, half of the year group learn French, and half learn Spanish. In Year 7 we are laying the foundations for all future foreign language learning. Our aim is to teach pupils the skills for independent referencing, for learning off by heart and for making links between one piece of knowledge and another.

In Year 8, all pupils will take up a second language – French, German or Spanish. Currently, the top two sets learn German. As pupils will have been learning French or Spanish for one year, they will have established language learning skills, and will be able to progress quickly in their second language.

In Year 9 pupils continue with their 2 languages. After studying the second language for 2 years, pupils are expected to have reached almost the same level as for their first language, and will be in a strong position to continue to GCSE.

Languages in Key Stage 4

During Year 9, pupils decide whether to continue learning a language to GCSE, and can opt for French or German – or both. Although studying a language to GCSE is not compulsory, it is encouraged, in order to give pupils the best opportunities in later life.

We follow the Edexcel specification and pupils are examined in 4 skill areas: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

Listening and Reading skills are tested by final examination, and each paper is worth 20% of the total.

The Speaking and Writing papers are both worth 30% and pupils will take 2 controlled assessments in each, which are spread out during the 2 year course, and are taken when pupils are ready.

A variety of resources are used to ensure that all learners are catered for, and that lessons are interactive, interesting and fun, so that all pupils are very well prepared for all controlled assessments.
