Curriculum

What we teach, and how we teach it, underpins our development of each child. We aim to prepare our students for further study and successful and fulfilling working lives. Ofsted judged that our curriculum “is a key factor in ensuring pupils’ excellent outcomes.” Class sizes average 24 but in many cases are less than this at Key Stage 4 and when pupils require additional support. We have an effective system of support for all pupils including those with Special Educational Needs and those identified as more able. Key Stage 3 currently covers years 7 and 8 at the school and provides a firm foundation for success at GCSE. Key Stage 4 covers years 9, 10 and 11 when students are prepared for GCSE examinations. Year 7 are taught in 2 broad bands of mixed ability on arrival, however in Maths these bands are set at half term. From Year 8, English and Maths set pupils across the year and there is some banding by ability when appropriate in other subjects. In Years 10 and 11, core subjects continue to be set but Options are taught in mixed ability groups. Movement between sets occurs when deemed necessary.

At Key Stage 3 we teach the full range of National Curriculum subjects, and are proud to offer three modern languages, (French, German and Spanish) together with a wide range of technology subjects. This is complemented by strong development of ICT capability, both in ICT lessons and across the curriculum. We provide excellent, personalised provision for those students who need additional support. Pupils will experience Maths, English, Science, Art, Drama, Music, PE, RS, Food Technology, Graphics, Resistant Materials, History, Geography, PSHE, ICT and a Modern Foreign Language. Our aim is to provide a thorough grounding for subsequent study.

Our wide choice of options at Key Stage 4 allows each student to configure a curriculum which meets their abilities and aspirations. We offer the full range of traditional academic subjects and a number of creative and broadly vocational subjects. These currently include at GCSE: English Language, English Literature, Maths, Computer Science, Core and Additional Science or Physics, Chemistry and Biology, French, Spanish, German, Geography, History, Philosophy and Ethics, Photography, Food Preparation and Nutrition, Design Technology, Art, Drama, Music, P.E. and ICT. We also offer level 2 qualifications in Health and Fitness, Catering, ICT and Business.

Our programme of personal development and careers guidance further enhances our provision, ensuring that students have the necessary knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their possible progression routes beyond Studley High School.
