Teacher of Art & Design
We believe in the power of art to enhance and foster creativity, enjoyment and cultural awareness. Our students are encouraged to explore creativity through art, using a wide variety of materials and processes.
Our aim is to lay down strong foundations in the practical and technical application of artistic processes as well as an historical and critical awareness of other artists.
We have two full-time art teachers who have wide ranging expertise and specializations to help support pupils' work. The Art Department is offers a range of art activities which include painting, print-making, textiles, sculpture and photography. These skills are particularly important at examination level where pupils are encouraged to be ambitious and go beyond what would be normally expected at their stage of development.
Recent educational visits have encouraged Compton Verney and Walsall Art Gallery with a group of Year 10 students. Students have also had many opportunities to work with practising artists in school which is of great importance in embracing creativity first hand.
• We aim to introduce a range of two and three dimensional art and design activities to encourage confidence and progression through learning.
• Provide opportunities for creative responses to a variety of starting points, and encourage selection and control of both appropriate tools and materials.
• Consider works of art, craft and design from a wide range of times and cultures, and where possible relate them to practical activities.
• Allow time and space for experimenting with materials and ideas in a creative environment.
• Provide opportunity to discuss and review their own work and that of others, which can include evaluation and assessment where appropriate.
• To develop pupils’ ability to value the contribution made by artists, craft workers and designers and to respond thoughtfully, critically and imaginatively to ideas, images and objects of many kinds and from many cultures.
• To develop pupils’ enthusiasm about Art and Design a greater awareness or art and artists.
• To enable pupils to become visually literate, using and understanding Art as a form of visual communication.
Homework is set in line with the students homework diaries and comprises of a range of activities such as collecting, recording, drawing, writing, designing, experimenting and researching information.
